Trndez: Jumping over the Bonfire to Make Way for the Spring

This year, too, we celebrated Trndez (Terntes, Tyarnundaraj), the feast of Presentation of the Lord at the Temple, celebrated in Armenia on February 14th. As is the tradition, on the eve of Trndez, Aregnazan was bursting with happiness and festivities.

A big bonfire was lit in the school courtyard, and the joyful and dynamic music of the Armenian dhol-zurna gathered everyone around. Aregnazan’s students and teachers danced around the fire, sang happy songs and jumped over the fire. The little ones were helped to jump by their friends from high school.

Hand in hand, we saw off the winter with kindness and love and got ready to welcome the new spring.

And we chanted the Armenian traditional Trndez rhyme:

“Trndez, light up your skirt,

To get rid of the evil snake.

Trndez, look beyond the smoke,

Sow one, reap a thousand.”
